The Creating Conversations: Gardening Activity Kit is a tool to assist activities coordinators and care staff to deliver relaxing and purposeful social opportunities and activities within care environments. It provides an accessible framework for both new and experienced facilitators to successfully deliver a full programme of creative activities for groups of older people, including those with a diagnosis of dementia (between 8 and 14 weekly sessions). All materials are easily adaptable for a range of physical and social needs.
This kit has been developed by a team of artists and dementia specialists with extensive experience in delivering creative activities with older people, with considerable input from older people with a diagnosis of dementia, their carers and support staff.

The tablecloth captures the tradition and the ritual of laying the table, which will so intrinsically familiar to the participants as a time to sit down and share a cuppa and a chat. The images on the tablecloth naturally prompt conversation amongst the group and the laying of the table to commence each session will become a familiar prompt for the group.
The activities handbook provides instructions for sessions around 8 topics to do with gardening. Each topic includes various creative activities and can take several session to complete, depending on individual groups. Sessions are structured to follow a pattern of laying the table and sharing a cuppa and a conversation about the days topic, which will flow naturally into the days activities (including visual arts, bulb planting, flower arranging, poetry recital, music etc) and then on to reflecting on what has been done in the session and planning for the next session, all-the-while focussing on conversation, discussion and the sharing of personal stories.
